Seckford Care encourages Woodbridge community to support Dementia Action Week

Seckford Care, which runs the Seckford Almshouses in Woodbridge, is encouraging local people to support Dementia Action Week (Monday 21 – Sunday 27 May), by hosting an informative talk at Woodbridge Library and introducing new dementia-friendly screenings at The Riverside Theatre. Dementia Action Week is a national initiative by the charity Alzheimer’s Society, which encourages communities to take action to support people affected by dementia.

Cathy O’Brien, Dementia Champion and deputy head of care at the Seckford Almshouses, will be hosting a free talk about dementia at Woodbridge Library on Thursday 24 May, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Cathy will also have an information stand at the library for people to pop in and have a chat about dementia throughout the morning from 10.30am.

On Wednesday 23 May, Cathy will be introducing a dementia-friendly film screening at The Riverside Theatre – the first in a regular series of screenings which will be accessible for people living with dementia. The Theatre will be showing ‘Iris’ – a true story about a novelist with Alzheimer’s disease, starring Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent and Kate Winslet. Tickets cost £7 with £1 from each ticket going towards Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The dementia talk and film screening are a part of Seckford Care’s campaign for Woodbridge to become a dementia-friendly town. Launched in April, the campaign is part of the Alzheimer’s Society’s national Dementia Friends initiative and is supported by the previous Mayor of Woodbridge, Councillor Clare Perkins, who recently became a Dementia Friend.

Cathy O’Brien said: “The Woodbridge community has already shown great support towards our dementia-friendly town campaign, and it’s fantastic to see local businesses like The Riverside Theatre get involved. There’s still more we can do to support people living with dementia, so I hope the community will join in our activities as part of Dementia Action Week.”
